Everyone Counts
Community Maths
Embracing the idea that mathematics is creative, exciting and social, Everyone Counts aims to challenge entire communities to think about maths differently and to have fun while doing so.
Everyone Counts works by developing a partnership between a primary school class and a co-teaching team. The co-teaching team consists of a teacher, a mathematician/scientist and a designer.
Over a period of nine weeks, the co-teaching team will teach a series of six workshops. These workshops will see the children create their own mathematical challenges. These challenges are put to the children’s local community with all involved thinking of creative ways to solve the problems.
Everyone Counts is run by UCD School of Education and Post Studio. It is supported by Science Foundation Ireland, the Irish Research Council and the RDS. The project team is led by Sorcha Browne (UCD PhD student), Robert Farrelly (Post Studio) and Dr Shane Bergin (UCD).
Schools & Community
The goal of Everyone Counts is to achieve community-wide participation in maths challenges.
How it Works
Everyone Counts hopes to spark conversations about mathematics in a community, and forge a stronger connection between mathematics learning and real-life experiences.

The workshops have been developed in a way to allow them to be customised by each co-teaching team and therefore providing a bespoke and culturally appropriate experience for the children.
The aim of the project is to have children and co-teachers venture out into the community armed with clipboards and pencils and engage with the public to have a go and answer their unique maths challenges.
Schools participating in Everyone Counts share their findings, and build on the work, at the ESB Primary Science Blast.
